Is Waukee Missing a Hockey Team?
The pros and cons and a Waukee hockey team

Should our school have a hockey team? Many students at our school play hockey and wish to have a hockey team. Sophomore Brant Kron states, “I think we should have a hockey team at our school because many people are interested and they can just try it out and see if they would like it.” I think having a hockey team for our school would have its advantages but also some disadvantages.
Many students may enjoy going to watch hockey games and supporting the team during the winter. Sophomore Noelle Determan likes to watch hockey but also plays competitively. “I like watching hockey because it’s competitive and there’s always something going on.”
Most schools don’t have a hockey team either, so to play against other teams, other schools will have to create a hockey team as well. That would take a lot of people to play, the space to play, and the supporters. Plus there would have to be an area where they could practice and compete on the ice, not just in a gym. Junior Tommy Kinney stated, “ Some problems that would occur with having a hockey team at schools in Des Moines, is the number of players. There are not 15 guys at each school that would be willing to play and/or know how to play.”
“Another problem would be the rinks,” Kinney added. “Rinks are very expensive and schools would not be able to afford to build a rink for each school, which is why every kid in Des Moines tries out for two teams.”
Hockey is a very competitive sport that would take a lot of support from the Waukee Community and other schools to be able to make happen. This is a very good idea that could possibly work out in the future as the community continues to grow. But right now it would be a lot of effort to get enough funding and people to support the establishment of a Waukee hockey team.
