The Waukee coin drive is making a change in our community

The Waukee High School Student Council wanted to recreate the University of Iowa’s yearly Dance Marathon which has raised over $13 million for cancer patients in the Stead Family Children’s Hospital over the past few years. To do this, the Student Council came up with the idea of a Coin Drive to promote both Waukee’s Dance Marathon and gather donations for the hospital. “Basically it’s an ongoing event where we collect coins through the elementary, middle, and high schools,” explains Student Council member Tony Wei, “We place jars in the front office and kids can bring in coins.”
The Coin Drive itself, however, is in no way to donate to the Dance Marathon. “The fundraising we get from the Coin Drive doesn’t go into the budget for our spending for the event, that money adds to the total donation money towards the hospital,” Tony clarifies. So far, they’ve been successful in their efforts, “I know from our first week, it was a little over $400, and that’s not even counting the middle school and high school levels,” he proudly announces.
So if students want to go to a fun event with prizes and to dance as well as support a good cause, “Get your tickets for the Dance Marathon, you won’t want to miss it, get your friends to sign up as well,” says Tony, “It’s still not too late to sign up through the QR codes posted around the school or if you want to go on the Student Council’s Instagram page (@waukeestuco) you can find the link in the bio, and come out and support.”
