As Iowa’s harsh winter begins, we are reminded of the harsh challenges faced by refugees in our communities who may be dealing with the bitter cold, which can be especially unforgiving for those who have fled their homes, often with their necessities. Recognizing the urgent need to provide warmth and comfort, communities around the world are coming together to organize winter clothes drives for refugees.
The International Club is currently hosting the Winter Refugee Drive, which Waukee students are encouraged to donate to support refugees in Des Moines. Junior, Mais Homedan shares “It’s been a tradition for the International Club for many years.” With much planning from the International Club, they upheld this tradition and started the cause. “The winter refugee drive is aimed at collecting necessities for refugees who have come from all over the world. The winter is a harsh season, and we want to help them with warm clothes, coats, hygiene products, etc. Anyone can donate to the drive up until the last day before winter break.” Homedan states.
A successful winter clothes drive for refugees not only provides immediate relief but also carries a sense of community in Waukee Schools. Sophomore Niamat Kudlagi expresses the importance of the drive, sharing “Many refugees arrive in countries with limited resources, and lack winter clothing to withstand colder climates like the one in Iowa. Our goal as a community is to provide support to ensure a warmer winter”. These efforts remind us that, regardless of borders or backgrounds, we all share a collective responsibility to support those in need.
Winter clothes drives in schools for refugees have a lasting impact. Thanks to the long efforts of the International Panel, a large number of refugees will have aid during the frosty season. Sophomore Michelle Tanui describes the drive as an “important and helpful” event, which helps many. “The club discussed ideas for the winter drives, like where to put the donations and how to make the drive known to everyone. I’m glad to see so many people donate to refugees in need”.
The Winter Refugee holds immense significance. These initiatives not only contribute to the immediate well-being of refugee students but also offer valuable lessons in empathy, solidarity, and global citizenship. Here are some key reasons why winter clothes drives in schools for refugees are important. These initiatives create a ripple effect, influencing not only the lives of refugee students but also shaping the attitudes and values of the entire school community. Although Iowa’s harsh winters are daunting to many, the community comes together to aid families in need.
