How Early is Too Early for Christmas?

As soon as it turned November 1st Mariah Carey unfrosted and unfortunately for me, my For You Page (FYP) on all social media platforms became flooded with Christmas-related posts. It’s only November though, when did the Christmas season start in November? I was always the type of person who thought that the Christmas season started the day after Thanksgiving. That brings the question of when it is too early to start celebrating Christmas. 

I asked students around WHS in a survey and with over 50 responses, 58.9 percent of students thought it was too early to celebrate Christmas in November, and 41.1 percent said it was the Christmas season. This has been an argument for a couple of years now. People are tired of Christmas coming earlier each year. I asked students around WHS what they thought about people celebrating Christmas in November. Junior Destiny Jones said “I do think it’s too early to be celebrating because it isn’t even past Thanksgiving and it’s not even December yet. Why put up stuff now, why can’t we wait till after Thanksgiving.” 

I asked friends Junior Brogan Turcotte and Senior Raleigh Freschi if they think it’s okay to celebrate Christmas already. Turcotte replied, “Each holiday should be confined to its month, or else we’re going to have this weird spillover thing, and it won’t feel like a holiday anymore. If we celebrate something year-round, it’s no longer going to be special. Christmas should be condemned to December.” 

Freschi responded to my question and Turcotte, “I agree with Brogan, but there’s also a point I have to make with his argument because what do we do with Easter because Easter switches between April and March? Do we celebrate it on the month it lands on or both months?”

It seems most students I talked to agreed that it was too early to be celebrating Christmas right now. However this topic seems to bring a bigger debate about when we should start celebrating certain holidays, is Halloween confined only to October? Should Thanksgiving start being celebrated the whole month of November or just that week? The answer varies from person to person. The question is when do you think it’s okay to start celebrating Christmas?
