The girl’s golf season has just begun. If you want to support the Warriors, they have some upcoming meets. First, they have a meet on Wednesday, April 16th, April 23rd, and April 30th at Sugar Creek at 3:30 pm. They also have one on Monday, April 21st at Cooper Creek at 3:30 pm. This season there are 6 girls on varsity and they are excited for this season. I wanted to highlight some girl golfers, so here is an insight into the golf season with two varsity girls, sophomore Makenna Parsons and junior Gretta Secory.
First Makenna Parsons. Makenna has been on varsity golf since her freshman year and said, “My greatest achievement so far has been making varsity my freshman year.” Makenna has worked hard and put in the time to have a successful season. One important thing about staying confident in golf is motivation. Makenna said, “I have been motivated to succeed as a golfer by my dad who has always supported me with the sport, and the love I have for the game.” Having a support system is extremely important for young athletes to stay mentally healthy and keep their passion for the sport going. Another important thing in all sports is setting goals and trying your best to achieve them. I asked Makenna about one goal she has for this season and she said, “A goal I have for this year’s season is to improve my game of golf and do good in the meets.” Setting goals can help any athlete want to accomplish better things, help them feel progression towards their goals, and help them stay focused throughout the season. Lastly, I asked Makenna for one piece of advice she would give to a younger golfer and she said, “Your mindset and mental game is one of the most important things when competing in a meet.”
Next, Gretta Secory. Gretta started playing golf when she was around 5 or 6 years old. She has been on varsity for three years and is a junior in high school. Gretta doesn’t plan on playing college golf but she said, “I’ll always appreciate the sport and will be focusing on academics in college instead.” Similarly to Makenna, I asked Gretta who motivates her to be the best golfer she can be. Gretta said, “My parents were the ones who introduced me to the sport, they encouraged me by signing me up for lessons and taking me to the driving range.” Without her biggest supporters, she might not have had so much success as a golfer. One of Grettas greatest achievements has been shooting her lowest score of 85 at the Jester Park Golf Course. She may not have accomplished this without the support and encouragement of her parents, and because of that she is very grateful for them. I asked Gretta for one goal she has for this golf season and she said, “My main goal is to beat my lowest score and shoot more consistently in the 80s.” The last thing I asked Gretta was for one piece of advice she has for an upcoming golfer and she said, “Don’t take yourself too seriously. Golf is a lot more enjoyable when you can shake off mistakes, have fun, and stay positive, and most of the time, you tend to play better with that mindset.”
Makenna and Gretta are great golfers and have worked so hard to be where they are today. They deserved to be highlighted for their perseverance and helpful advice for younger golfers. Go watch them at a golf meet!
