There will be a new member joining WHS for this upcoming school year. His name is Kevin Atterberg and he will be a new assistant principal. Mr. Atterberg will be responsible for various things, including being a support system for staff and students, helping promote a safe and comfortable learning environment, enhancing the culture, and maintaining a respectful school for all students and staff members. Mr. Atterberg said, “I’m really excited to contribute to the WHS community and support students in their academic and personal growth.”
Next, let’s get into a bit of background about Mr. Atterberg. He has been in the education field for the past fourteen years and has taught at a few different schools. First, Mr. Atterberg taught middle school science for five years in Lincoln, Nebraska. After this, he joined the West Des Moines Community Schools and spent five more years teaching science at the middle school level. He was also an instructional coach at Valley High School for four years. Additionally, while at the West Des Moines district, he sponsored the student council and coached the Lego League team. Going back further, Mr. Atterberg grew up in Keokuk, Iowa with the Mississippi River being right behind his house. He said, “I’ve both swam across it in the summer and walked across it in the winter when it was completely frozen.” He then attended the University of Iowa where he was the starting blindside flanker on the rugby team. He said, “Go Hawks!”
Lastly, I asked Mr. Atterberg a few questions about himself and his upcoming journey to WHS. The first thing I asked Mr. Atterberg was what he was most looking forward to here at Waukee. He said, “I’m most looking forward to becoming part of such a vibrant and forward-thinking school community. I’ve heard amazing things about the students, staff, and culture here at Waukee. I’m excited to build strong relationships, collaborate with passionate educators, and contribute to the positive energy that’s clearly a big part of WHS.” The next thing I asked him was to give one piece of advice for a high school student. He replied, “Don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things. High school is the perfect time to explore different interests, meet new people, and challenge yourself. It’s okay not to have everything figured out—just keep learning, stay curious, and surround yourself with people who support your growth.” Lastly, I asked Mr. Atterberg for one fun fact about himself and he said, “I am a proud first-generation college student.”
